Libertadores: Fluminense win Copa after dramatic penalty shootout
Brazilian side Fluminense have won the Copa Libertadores for the third time after beating Independiente del Valle via a penalty shootout
The game was tied 1-1 after extra time, with Fluminense winning 4-2 on penalties. The win gives Fluminense their first Copa Libertadores title since 2012.
"I'm very happy for the team," said Fluminense coach Roger Machado. "We worked hard all season and we deserved to win. I'm proud of my players."
Fluminense took the lead in the 24th minute through a goal from Fred. Independiente del Valle equalized in the 58th minute through a goal from Luis Segovia.
The game went to extra time but neither team could find a winner. Fluminense won the penalty shootout 4-2, with goalkeeper Fábio saving two penalties.
"We played a great game," said Independiente del Valle coach Renato Paiva. "We had our chances but we couldn't take them. We're disappointed but we're also proud of our team."
The Copa Libertadores is the top-tier South American continental club football tournament. It was first played in 1960 and is considered one of the most prestigious club competitions in the world.
