China Battered by Typhoon Gaemi, Residents Displaced

Flooding, Evacuations as Typhoon Pummels Coastal Regions

Typhoon Gaemi, one of the strongest storms to hit China in years, has caused widespread flooding and forced thousands from their homes.

In the coastal city of Taizhou, residents whose homes were inundated by floodwaters took shelter in a basketball court that had been converted into an evacuation center. "The water came up so quickly," said one resident. "We had to leave everything behind."

Elsewhere in China, boats were returning to port to shelter from the storm. In the eastern province of Jiangsu, authorities have issued evacuation orders for more than 100,000 people.

Typhoon Gaemi is expected to continue to bring heavy rain to China over the next few days. The storm has already caused at least 13 deaths in the Philippines, where it is known as Super Typhoon Carina.

The Chinese government has deployed emergency response teams to the affected areas. The teams are distributing food, water, and medical supplies to those in need.
